Ethan Hacker’s senior capstone exhibition, Instance and Obstruction is a portfolio project that reflects a culmination of his photographic work. The collection of photographs in Instance and Obstruction speaks to intrusions of self-awareness as they appear in moments of social intimacy.
Putting Instance and Obstruction together was as much a process of curation as it was a process of capturing images. While many of the photographs were captured with the intention of displaying them in a collection, the majority of the images themselves were captured freely between the years of 2018 and 2022. The bulk of the creative and intellectual work in putting together the exhibition was discovering how to make narrative connections between images.
The exhibition in essence, features two ‘styles’ of imagery: portrait images and abstract images. The curation of the portrait images involved a significant amount of me reflecting on the personal relationships I had with the subjects, as well as the process I went through while capturing their portraits. The abstract images involved searching through many digital and film negatives which I might have otherwise discarded, trying to find ‘happy accidents’ or aesthetically pleasing digital mishaps.
